I drank Bear Republic’s Mach 10 on tap at a new beer and food place that blew me away. Strong Place in Cobble Hill Brooklyn. A half hour before sitting down we bought two bottles of Goose Island Vanilla, so needless to say I was in a good beer mood.
This IPA tones down the typical West Coast hop bombs and actually brings the malty roastiness to the front. It pours amber with good lace and not so good head. Smell is hop citrus/pine. It hit the spot on my drinking profile that evening, so it can stand on it’s own for IPA taste, but at the back end there’s a bitterness that isn’t welcome.
It is an imperial though, and it masks the 8.7abv well within a medium body. That’s probably the reason for the up front malts.
Good, but not great.
