Another notch in the belt of the JapanQuest! Kiuchi is far and away my favorite brewery on that part of the globe, and this Espresso Stout is a testament to their skill. I can’t say it’s perfect; doing a coffee stout in an American style is pretty much setting yourself up for failure when compared with others, but this one is darn drinkable.
It pours a dark brown hue and has minimal head that goes away fairly quickly. Swirling it around makes for some nice trails. The smell is of coffee – well, perhaps espresso – and another usual suspect – malty dark chocolate. Tastes that way too, with a tiny hint of fruits and tartness.
Its typical mouthfeel and average alcohol content of 7.5% does the style, but doesn’t do it exceptionally. I’d be happy with this as long as there weren’t better options, but I won’t be lining up for this red owl.
